Bluegrass THREADS is thrilled to feature the stunning Sarah Kays—the fabulous owner of Sadie Lou as a local style standout!

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I was born and raised in the heart of the bluegrass. Recently I graduated with a Masters of Architecture degree from the University of Kentucky, GO CATS! I love good design in all capacities and it truly occupies a majority of my thoughts. I have an active imagination which keeps me busy,I am constantly in the middle of a new creative project.

As an inquisitive person my interests are far reaching. Last spring I utilized my love of graphic design and sewing to create a series of custom textiles. Equipped with these designs and an entrepreneurial spirit, I established a small independent clothing line concentrated on introducing young designers to the buying public, Sadielou.us.

Describe your personal style…

I’m open to a lot of different looks; My style is usually a reflection of appropriateness of venue, season, and the current trends. Perhaps the major overarching theme in my dress is that I would rather be overdressed then under-dressed. My Mother has always said “Sweats go on the same way as a nice pair of slacks”, so why not dress up!

Who are your style icons?

Its easy to buy nice clothes if you have the budget. I look up to the everyday people who make a look their own- no matter the price on the tag.

What does “bluegrass style” mean to you?

I think that  bluegrass style is feminine, bright and most importantly practical. We know how to dress for the occasion- If its a rainy Keeneland day we will don a feminine dress, exude our bright personality and sport the most practical rain boots we own. It has been my experience that this is how our southern Beaus like to see their Belles;)

What are some style challenges that you face, and how do you deal with them?

Budget, Cut, Color, finding these three attributes in a single article of clothing is the holy grail of style. Sadly this a rarely occurring phenomenon, something I think all women struggle with. Perhaps the most challenging thing is accepting that not all the latest trends befit me.

How important is hair and make-up to your personal style?

I did not get the Hair Stylist gene, so hot rolling my hair is routine.

I love a good bright lipstick!

Which are the accessories that you never go without?

Earrings. I once read ( probably in a very credible magazine like Seventeen, lol) that wearing earrings can make you look five years younger. To this day I will not leave the house without something on my ears, after all who wants to look their age.

What is your must have for spring?

I am absolutely in love with the eyelet/lace hybrid going around this spring. Its a great modern update to a feminine classic. Unfortunately this look at its best, by the Louis Vuitton 2012 Spring line, is over my budget; however I’m excited by the challenge of translating this look into a 2D graphic for the SL summer collection.

Tell us about Sadie Lou and how our readers can find your products…

SADIE LOU  started out specializing in unique homemade accessories, this spring we hope to broaden our spectrum by introducing a clothing line.  What remains the same is our commitment to quality materials, construction and design- bringing a little southern-belle charm to every wardrobe.

Who:

Design translates across many fields; therefore we enlist young talented designers with many different backgrounds. Our “staff” includes graphic designers, artists, writers, photographers, architects, and web specialists.

What:

What we make is just as important to us as what we are about.

What we make:

-Made to order dresses and accessories.

We want to feature clothing as unique as our costumers personality.

First: Choose the dress style that works best for you.

Second: Pick from our  Fabulous Print Textiles.

Third: We will make to order the dress that you designed.

What we are about:

– Promoting young designers

With this venture we meant to be a soap box of sorts for young designers. helping them gain work experience and promote their fantastic designs.

– Making great eco friendly designs

Our manufacturing and production process is what helps our designs remain eco friendly.

-Our fabrics are laser printed, a process that produces zero runoff pollution.

-We print and make our dresses to order; therefore we produce no additional clothing waste.

– Producing hand crafted treasures

Nothing is sacred anymore, its void the story and human touch. We hope with the knowledge that our products are made to order specifically for our costumer it elevates the meaning, into a treasure -potentially passed through generations.

– Opening up the design process (visit our blog)

Design is an integral part of our modern existence, by opening up this process we hope that it humanizes the objects that we interact with daily.

When/Why:

I graduated from architecture school last May It was during a down economy, firms were not hiring and people were not building.

Luckily to stay afloat I found a job nannying. Out of the sheer necessity to do something creative I started to make fabric necklaces to go with/ jazz up my new wardrobe of jeans and a T-shirt. And if I do say so myself they turned out pretty cute! Soon people started to notice and orders were coming in left and right.

Wanting to take this new venture to the next step, and help out friends who where in the same boat, I launched The Sadielou.us web site. By enlisting fellow graduates to help we are now able to say that Sadie Lou uses in house designed textiles for our goods.

Where:

The Sadie Lou operation started in my small hometown of Lawrenceburg Kentucky, but our talented designers are located across the united States. We have our custom textiles printed in the U.S. by a small southern fabric company. All of our products are hand crafted in Kentucky.

Thanks, Sarah!  Can’t wait to see what Sadie Lou does next!  Here is a sneak peak of their upcoming pattern line.
